Our New .22 LR Ammo Test

We have decided to do a comprehensive test on all the .22 Long Rifle ammo we can find here.

The test was run according to the following formats.

50 rounds, shot in 5, 10-shot groups, at 100 yards.

First 50 rounds were taken from one box of 50 as they came from the factory.

Second 50 were selected by weight, each 10 rounds shot in a group weighed exactly the same weight.

Third 50 were selected by rim thickness. Each 10 rounds in a group had exactly the same rim thickness.

 The first rifle selected was the Bleiker 22F3-79 Match Rifle.

All shooting was done in our indoor shooting range, off the bench, at 100 yards.

 Here are a few notes regarding the ammo we tested.

 Winchester T22 had a rim thickness of 0.037 - 0.047" This ammo would not function in the Bleiker. Almost every round failed to extract, so I gave up on testing them.

Most consistant weight was found in the Lapua SIGNUM

CCI MiniMag HP had a rim thickness of 0.040-0.041"

Fiocchi TT Sport had a very large weight variation - 47.2 - 56.4 grains

RWS amo had very sticky lube.

Pobjeda target - which turned out to be terribe, had a rim variation of 0.038-0.048"!!??

 Eley Practice 100 had the most consistant rims - all were 0.038"

Aguila Sniper SubSonic had rims 0.038-0.039".

Winchester Wildcat will not function in this rifle. We had the same problems as the T22.

Functionally, ammo from Lapua, Eley and RWS functioned flowlessly.

Some of the other makes were not as consistant.

I tried to make trhe following table in as much of an order as I could.

But, as we did not have all the ammo here all at the same time, the table is not as orgenized as I had wished to be.

I know, I could have waited until all the shooting has been done before entering all the data, but that means more to do at the end instead of entering the data as it shot.

The Remington High Velocity ammo and the Federal Gold Medal - old - ammo we have had for at least 25 years.

 

Target marked MIXED WEIGHTS are straight from the box, nothing has been done to them.

Target marked SAME WEIGHT are weighed, and each group of 10 are exactly the same weight.

Targets marked as SAME RIMS had teh rims measured, and each group of 10 have exactly the same rim thickness.

16 types of ammo shot better without selecting either weight or rim thickness. This is from a total of 63 types shot. This equates to 25.4%.

25 types of ammo shot better when selected by weight. This equates to 39.7%.

22 types of ammo shot better when the rim thickness was selected. This equates to 34.9%.

All ammo was bought from stores. None was supplied by any manufacturer.
