9.53 SATURN

The following data was developed in a Lazzeroni Model 2000 rifle. I’ve had a number of Lazzeroni rifles through here, and I was very impressed by their accuracy. And looking at their cartridge lineup, I saw that there was a jump from the 8.59 Titan (338) to the 1057 Meteor (416). I spoke to John Lazzeroni in the summer of 1997, and asked him if he would consider building a rifle for me based on his 10.57 Meteor necked down to 375. He said he was thinking about it, and if I would be his first customer, he would be more than happy to build one. He promised delivery in about 6-month time. At the same time I asked him to install my rifle in a classic stock.

The rifle arrived and I installed a Leupold 4.5 –14X scope on it and proceeded to develop the following loads for it. And as my intention was to use this rifle for hunting big dangerous game in Africa, I used my personal favourite bullet, the Barnes X. I have used this bullet in different calibers and I am absolutely thrilled with its performance.

With the rifle came a set of RCBS dies and some 416 Meteor brass. It was very easy to form these cases to the 9.53 Saturn. All you have to do is run the cases into the full length sizing die and your done!

We used the Federal 215 primers in Lazzeroni brass throughout our tests.

All bullets were molly coated, and all groups are 3 shots at 100 yards.

You might notice that the velocity for 111 grain of VVN 560 is actually LESS than the one we got for 110 grains of the same powder. I have noticed this on several occasions with very large cases. I think the reason is that one grain of powder makes very little change in velocity in this case size – sometimes even less than the variation you would get between the slowest and fastest in any one group.
