338-404 JEFFEREY

The following data was developed in a Hall Giant rifle, with a 29-inch heavy barrel from Hart. It is the same rifle we used to develop the 30-338 Winchester magnum, 30-8mm Remington magnum and the 7mm STW loads in. We used RWS 404 brass and the Federal 215 primers. A Leupold 6.5-20X scope was used. It was mounted in Jewel Live Center rings on Kelbly bases.

Our rifle has a 0.362” neck, and we found the best way to form our brass was to pass it through a 375/404 die first, then through the 338/404 die. We then turned the necks down to just over 0.011. We used a load of 77 grains of VVN 165 and the Nosler 200 grain Ballistic Tip bullets, with Winchesters WLRM primers to fire form our cases and break in the barrel at the same time.

Groups with the Nosler 200 grain Ballistic Tip and the Sierra 300 grain Match Kings are 5 shots at 100 yards.

Groups with the Winchester 230 Fail Safe are 3 shots groups at 100 yards.

NB. Please note the very slight increase in some of the loads, even though the powder charge was increased by a full 2 grain!
